Structure of the library

  • Functions of the department include:

    • the current, retrospective acquisition of the fund with domestic and foreign documents;
    • recompletion (write-off);
    • licensing of remote databases in accordance with the profile of the university;
    • acceptance, registration, accounting and cataloging of publications coming to the library;
    • book exchange with libraries of medical universities of the republic;
    • registration of replacement of literature lost by users;
    • organization, maintenance and improvement of the catalog system in card and electronic formats;
    • maintenance a database of book availability in the educational process.

  • Main functions of the department:

    • Serving users in reading rooms and subscriptions using auxiliary funds and the main storage fund;
    • Control over the terms of use of publications and taking measures to eliminate debts, control over the safety of publications;
    • Interlibrary loan (ILA) and electronic document delivery services;
    • Registration and statistical accounting of readers.

    The service department consists of:

    • Educational literature delivery desk

      Educational literature delivery desk has a fund of educational literature recommended by curricula for use in the educational process for students at all faculties and forms of education. Its main task is to fully satisfy the needs of users in the educational literature.

      Educational literature delivery desk is doing the following work:

      • re-registration of library users; 
      • lending sets of educational literature to students and listeners for cycle classes, for a semester or an academic year;  
      • individual service.

    • Scientific and fiction literature delivery desk with point of registration of readers

      Has a fund of scientific, popular science and reference literature.

      The department offers classical and modern fiction stories and novels by Belarusian, Russian and foreign authors. Books are organized by genres: historical novels, detective stories, science fiction, adventure stories, romantic novels, children’s literature, folklore, and biographies. The collection is supplemented with new arrivals and donated books. 

      During books exhibitions dedicated to any cultural event, for example, a writer or any story’s jubilee, new arrivals along with interesting publications of previous years are also exposed.


      Department’s functions:


      • unified point of registration: registering and handing out the university library membership cards to faculty (members), postgraduates, staff members and other categories of readers;
      • serving all types of readers;
      • organizing of thematic book exhibitions.

    • Reading room #1

      The fund of the reading room contains educational literature on the studied disciplines, as well as dictionaries, handbooks and encyclopedias. All categories of users are served in the reading room and their re-registration is carried out. Also thematic exhibitions and exhibitions for significant and memorable dates are organized here.

    • Reading room for periodicals

      The fund of this reading room includes journals on biological and chemical sciences, medicine, social and humanitarian disciplines, as well as republican and local newspapers. The fund also contains a fund of technical normative legal acts (GOSTs, technical regulations, codes of established practice, etc.).

    • Reading room #2

      Reading Room of Foreign Literature has educational and scientific medical literature, literature on natural and social sciences in english language. The fund covers all branches of medicine and related sciences: surgery, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, obstetrics and gynecology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, dermatology, histology, pediatrics, cardiology, parasitology and others. The reading room contains literature on hygiene, genetics, biology, botany, biochemistry. Users are offered various reference publications, textbooks, study guides, monographs, atlases.

  • The department's work is carried out in the following areas:

    • reference and bibliographic services (performing bibliographic references);
    • generation of bibliographic and other databases, including as part of corporate cooperation:
      • participation in a corporate project for the analytical listing of Belarusian journals;
      • maintaining a database of works by VSMU employees;
      • creation of a database “Teachers of Vitebsk Medical University on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War”;
      • creation of the “Scientists of Belarus” database;
    • bibliographic support of teachers’ personal pages on the university website;
    • checking bibliographic lists for educational programs;
    • compilation of thematic and personal bibliographic indexes;
    • satisfies requests received by the ONLINE HELP SERVICE "ASK A LIBRARIAN".

  • The Sector's work is carried out in the following areas:

    • providing remote access to electronic information resources (databases, electronic library systems, electronic libraries, etc.);
    • consulting users on the use of information resources;
    • informing users about library resources and services;
    • informing the university administration on issues of higher medical education, etc.;
    • informing individual groups of users according to their profile (holding Days of specialists, graduate students, departments, faculties, etc.);
    • assistance in improving the information culture of users (conducting training seminars on the use of electronic resources, information retrieval, bibliographic design of works, etc.).

    The Sector includes a reference and bibliographic service hall, which is equipped with automated user workstations. The Technology and Innovation Support Center operates on its basis, providing access to patent information.

  • The Sector provides technological processes for placement, storage and preservation of the main fund of the library. Ensures the completeness of user service by delivery of documents from the main fund to the divisions of the service department.

    • administration of the local network of the library;
    • consulting assistance to library staff in the introduction of new software products;
    • library site administration;
    • provision of paid services of copying, scanning and printing of documents.
